Dear Graduates and Guests,
Members of the Press,
Ladies and Gentleman,
On this special day, we have gathered here to witness the graduation ceremony of a group of outstanding students of the Presidency University. They will soon touch the precious milestone of a lifetime of learning. I congratulate, in advance, all the soon to-be-graduates --for their successful quest of academic advancement.
The success of these students is the product of their determination and perseverance and years of hard work. You, to say the least, are our pride and joy! Congratulations!
The "congratulation" will be incomplete if we don’t thank the family members who have supported these bright individuals throughout the years, faculty members who have spent countless hours in guiding the students and staff members who worked hard to ensure a smooth educational process. Also, there are many anonymous faces who have contributed directly or indirectly to the success of these students. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart and may Allah reward all of you for your positive contributions. The 1st Convocation of Presidency University today is the long awaited success story of a great team effort.
Bangladesh, in recent years, has seen drastic changes in the education sector—especially in higher education. The landmark Private University Act of 2010 and new guidelines of the University Grants Commission for the private universities in Bangladesh have placed positive burdens on us and encouraged us to be more responsible for providing better and quality education. In this regard, I specially thank the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also thank the Honorable Minister of Education Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid, Honorable Chairman of UGC Professor A K Azad and other members of parliament for taking the right initiatives that will help ensure quality higher education in Bangladesh for the years to come.
Presidency University was established in 2003 with the vision of contributing to the development of Bangladesh by providing quality higher education. With deepest sense of respect, we acknowledge the contribution of late Mr. Moslehuddin Ahmed for his earnest initiative to establish this University. We also acknowledge the contribution of the first Chairperson Mrs. Rokia Afzal Rahman and support of all the sponsor members of the Presidency University Foundation & the past Vice Chancellors. Students are the focus of all our activities. With this in mind, we always emphasize on recruiting only the faculty members with excellent academic backgrounds. We do not stop in just appointing the faculty-- we regularly arrange teacher training seminars and workshops to ensure that those faculty members know the latest teaching techniques to help their students. From time to time, we have even brought in trainers from the UK and the US to support our teachers and students.
Educational costs have increased rapidly in the last decade in Bangladesh, particularly in the higher education sector. With limited number of seats in public universities, private universities are now stepping in to provide valuable options to the students. Unfortunately, for many of the students, education at a private university is beyond their financial capacities. Recognizing this limitation, we have kept the tuition fees at a minimum to ensure more of the students get the opportunity to pursue higher education. Moreover, we provide significant amount of scholarships or tuition waivers to deserving
students and additional financial support for the children of the freedom fighters and minority students, including women.
Since its inception, Presidency University remained focused on quality educational services to the students. We have approximately 100 teachers and educational support officers for about 1200 students, which means that our student-faculty ratio is excellent! Recently, the Honorable Minister of Education correctly praised Presidency University as one of the best universities in the country!
Dear Graduates, we have given you as much as our capacities have allowed. Now it is your turn to show the world that you are indeed worth of the certificates you will soon hold.
Thank you honorable guests, distinguished faculty and colleagues for joining us in celebrating the 1st Convocation of Presidency University.
